Discovering Launch School
by Adrian Andrews
After almost 10 years of working in health care, I decided to make a career change. I was feeling burned out and I had discovered a lot about myself over the years. I was craving something new, something challenging in a different way. I love problem solving and I’m really into bouldering. In the world of bouldering you climb up a wall through a problem. Not only do you have to strength and power, but you have to be able to have good technique to solve the problem. This led me to programming. Just like in bouldering, I wanted a career where I focus on technical skills to solve problems. At first, I was nervous and had some doubt as I am completely new to programming. When I stumbled upon Launch School through a friend, I knew I had found the right program for me and decided to take the plunge. Launch School’s Mastery Based Learning really resonated with me and I knew that if I was going to make a career change into a completely new field, that I needed to focus on a program where it embraces the slower path to learning. I’ve always thought of myself as one those “I’m not good at math people” and after about 9 months into this slow path of learning, I’ve really surprised myself with learning about the command line, to solving small to medium sized technical problems using Ruby. It hasn’t been easy though. There has definitely been some self-doubt. Am I smart enough? How long is this going to take? Will companies hire me after I complete the course? I’ve put my trust in Launch School as well as myself. I keep pushing forward, reinforced with positive self talk. I always try to remind myself that I’m completely new to programming and this is hard stuff!
